Content Agency\, LLC\, ANNIE is based on Harold
Gray's popular comic strip “Little Orphan Annie” which premiered in the 1
920s in the New York Daily News and became one of the most widely
read strips in the 30s and 40s. Lyricist Martin Charnin
bought a coffee table book called “The Life and Hard Times of Little Orph
an Annie” as a Christmas gift for a friend in 1970. The clerk at the books
tore was too busy to wrap the book\, so Charnin took the book home to wrap
it. Instead\, he read it and fell in love with the strip and set out to
secure the rights. The friend never got the book. \n The original production of ANNIE had
its world premiere on Aug 10\, 1976 at the Goodspeed Opera House (Michael
J. Price\, Executive Director) and opened on Broadway on April 21\, 1977 a
t the Alvin Theatre (Neil Simon theatre). It went on to win the New York
Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical\, seven Drama Desk Awards incl
uding Best Musical\, the Grammy for Best Cast Show Album and seven Tony Aw
ards including Best Musical\, Best Book (Thomas Meehan) a
nd Best Score (Charles Strouse\, Martin Charnin). It clo
sed on Broadway after playing 2\,377 performances. ANNIE was revived on Broadway in 1997 and again in 2014. It has been made into a film three times (1982\, 1999\, 2014)

\nThe farm has ample parking for guests. \n Thornbury Farm is
a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm where members receive
\nfresh fruit and vegetables. Thornbury’s fresh vegetables and herbs are g
rown using natural
\npractices without the use of harmful substances
such as pesticides and herbicides. No chemical
\nsprays\, synthetic f
ertilizers\, or genetically engineered seed are used.
\nAlso\, local
breads and baked goods are available along with Swarmbusin’ Honey and Gold
en
\nValley Coffee. \n Thornbury Farm is in the process of resto
ring a 1926 Mudler Hunter pipe organ. The organ
\ncontains 2\,300 pip
es with a Haskell Swell Division and a Mollier Choir Division. The main
\nblower is more than 100 years old and weighs in excess of 2\,000 poun
ds. The farm is raising
\nmoney for replacement parts\, new leather s
eals and to update the electrical work.
\nSpackman said\, “It is the
hope of Thornbury Farm to host several concerts and lectures each
\ny
ear to serve the community. Our goal is to preserve an instrument of great
music but also
\neducate others on history and art.” \n Thornbu
ry Farm was founded in 1709 with a stone house. The “main house” is the fi
rst
\nquarried home in Pennsylvania and was built using the property’
s own quarry. On this location\,
\nthere stood a log cabin that was b
uilt in the 1600’s. The original owner was a blacksmith who
\nused th
e abundant lime stone to make flux in an old lime kiln. \n The house
has been added to approximately every 80 years. The serpentine addition wi
th its
\nmain stair case was used as the first public library in Ches
ter County. In the mid-1800’s\, a
\nkitchen was added with a beehive
oven. The oven doors still exist and this room eventually
\nbecame a
dining room. Finally\, a modern kitchen was added in the 1940’s.
\nOv
er the years\, other buildings were added including a large stone spring h
ouse\, a bank barn
\nin 1740 and another farm house in 1812. The 1812
house and the main house were later used as
\nstops on the Undergrou
nd Railroad. \n The farm was the site of the final troop engagement o
f the Battle of Brandywine\, the largest
\nland battle of the America
n Revolution. It was during this battle that our flag was displayed and
\nfired upon by the British for the first time.
\nDuring the battl
e\, soldiers from the Continental Army ran up the farm’s stream to avoid a
\ncrushing pincer movement by the German Hessian soldiers. Instead\,
the Americans became
\ntrapped between the Hessians on South New Str
eet and the English on the other side of the
\nstream. So many Americ
ans were shot and bayoneted\, it was said the blood flowed over two
\nmiles to the Brandywine. \n The barn and large deep spring house we
re used to hold prisoners and the main house was
\nused as a hospital
. During the gruesome surgery practices of that time\, limbs of hurt soldi
ers
\nwere thrown out the window. Two mass burial sites on the proper
ty were used to dispose of the
\ndead. \n There is so much unres
t on the property that Duke University performed para-psychological
\nresearch in the early 1980’s. Duke used EVP readings and multiple medium
s that were spaced 2
\nhours apart over a 24-hour time period. The me
diums did not have any contact with each other
\nand their notes were
compared. During their investigation\, they learned of 9 separate identit
ies –
\n8 in the house and one in the spring house. The barn was revi
ewed and found a little girl looking
\nfor her doll near one of the c
overed wells\; a young boy solider atop of the hay mow overlooking
\n
the battle\, as he had left his post and was afraid. \n The house has
the ghost of the original owner who hung himself over a now covered hand
dug
\nwell in the basement. There is also a ghost of a man who froze
to death in what was a window
\nwell of the earlier building. A soldi
er blocks the back stair case next to a coffin style door. Also
\nfou
nd were a ghost in the master bedroom and a young girl crying in the next
room. One old
\ngrumpy man was found to haunt the spring house. \n
In 2009\, the farm was investigated by members of The Atlantic Paranorm
al Society.
\nTAPS had similar findings and the episode aired on the
SyFy Channel. \n \n
