Thefts from vehicles

During
this past weekend, PSP Media again responded to theft from motor vehicles
complaints. Many happened in the
driveways of residences.

Some vehicle owners are
making themselves easy targets for thieves by leaving: valuables in plain view,
keys in the vehicle, doors unlocked or the windows opened.

Operators
and passengers should not leave anything in plain view. The following are examples of items
that have been left in plain view and were stolen: purses, cell phones, laptops,
briefcases, money, wallets, I-pods, etc.

The following crime
prevention tips are recommended:

  • do not leave
    valuables in plain view
  • completely close all vehicle windows
  • lock your vehicle and take out the keys
  • when using your garage, make sure your vehicle
    and garage door are locked
  • try to park in
well-lit areas close to your destination
  • if valuables need to
be left in your vehicle, place them in the trunk prior to arriving at your
    destination
  • engrave expensive
    accessories
  • avoid leaving your
    vehicles running while unattended

If
you observe and/or hear anything suspicious (i.e. a vehicle alarm has been
activated), please call 911 immediately.
