Longwood aiming high for holidays

Now that Halloween is history, holiday thoughts may turn to Thanksgiving, but area residents may not want to wait until then to schedule their visit for the annual Christmas at Longwood Gardens.

This year’s display promises to soar with its bird theme. From trees adorned with nests and feathered friends, to topiary swans, to an expanded outdoor light display, the holiday season flies higher than ever before, according to a Longwood press release.

Screen Shot 2014-11-03 at 3.15.03 PMThe Music Room will depict a festive Peacock Masquerade Ball, featuring elegant table settings and an 18-foot rotating tree. Outside, colorful fountains will dance, glimmering snowflakes will hang overhead, and a half- million lights will illuminate more of the outdoor gardens than ever before.

Timed ticketing will offer select times to enjoy the displays and exhibits. With a timed ticket, a pre-established number of guests enter during each interval, allowing guests to enjoy shorter lines and a better viewing experience. Purchasing a timed ticket during a non-peak day — Mondays through Fridays from Nov. 27 to Jan. 11, excluding Dec. 26–31 — will result in lighter crowds.

To avoid lines, visitors should print barcoded tickets and member reservations at home to show upon entry. Or, go paperless and open the print-at-home tickets on a smartphone prior to entering the Visitor Center for scanning.

Although members may visit anytime, they also require free, untimed reservations after 2 p.m. on peak days (every Saturday, Sunday, and Dec. 26-31). Reservations are limited, and sell-out is likely. Chimes Tower members and those included in their membership level do not require reservations. If using complimentary guest tickets, check for restrictions; most are not valid on peak days.

Exclusive members-only hours are scheduled on select Mondays: Dec. 1, 8, and 15 from 5 to 10 p.m. Members can bring guests using complimentary guest tickets, or can purchase timed tickets on-site. The merry melodies of the Olde Towne Carolers will fill the gardens from 5 to 9 p.m. on these evenings. Members will also receive an all-day 20 percent discount at the restaurants and gift shop on those Monday.
