Safe Harbor to celebrate 20 years of advocacy

Safe Harbor, a Chester County homeless shelter whose mission extends far beyond providing a place to sleep, is commemorating its 20th anniversary next month.

The nonprofit will celebrate two decades of providing community services with a fundraising event on Saturday, April 25, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Mendenhall Inn, and it’s looking for sponsors as well as attendees.

Safe Harbor’s goals reach beyond mere food and shelter for homeless single men and single women. It aims to help rebuild lives and life skills, reestablish self-esteem, and help people overcome the issues that prevent them from leading independent, productive lives, according to its website.

On Dec. 22, 1995, Safe Harbor opened, housing 20 single homeless men and four women. In its first year of operation, it served 146 men and nine women. By 2010, it doubled its capacity with a $1.6 million expansion to meet demand. In 2012, 305 men and women were served.

In 2013, Safe Harbor began participating in Chester County’s Decade to Doorways program, an ambitious initiative to prevent and end homelessness in 10 years. One of the components of the program, ConnectPoints, provides a toll-free number – 1-800-935-3181 – that people in need can call to receive information on a variety of services, including which shelters have beds available on that particular day, job-training referrals and substance-abuse treatment.

Safe Harbor also provides lunch for 40 to 65 low- and no-income men, women, and children from the community every weekday from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

The Mendenhall Inn is located at 323 Kennett Pike in Chadds Ford. For more information or to reserve tickets, which will include a four-course, sit-down dinner, visit http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=uzzeuwcab&oeidk=a07eagrwrthcab1826d&oseq.
